Target population:

  • Women aged 25 to 64 years who have ever had sexual experience.
  • Women at or over 65 years old and had ever had sexual intercourse should seek doctor's advice if they never had a cervical smear before. Even if reached menopause, had no sexual intercourse for a long time or had sterilization, cervical smear may still be important.
  • Women below the age of 25 who have risk factors of cervical cancer should seek medical advice from doctors concerning the need for cervical cancer screening.
  • Women who have never had sex or had total hysterectomy do not need cervical smear.

Screening interval

At the beginning, a woman should have cervical smear annually for two consecutive years and if both results are normal, she could have cervical smear every three years.

Target coverage

The estimated coverage rate for women in Hong Kong was around 43%. The Cervical Screening Programme aims to increase the coverage rate to 60% within 3 years of launching and to reach 80-85% in the long term.
