It is well known that regular cervical screening can prevent cervical
cancer. However, cervical cancer is still one of the ten major lethal
cancers among women in Hong Kong. This report highlights the importance
of regular cervical screening for the prevention of cervical cancer. The exhibition dates and venues for November and December are listed
in the following table: All are welcomed. The exhibition dates and venues for September and October are listed
in the following table: Exhibition venues and details from November to December will be
announced closer to the time. To increase the public’s knowledge on cervical screening and participation
in the Programme, a series of roving exhibition will be organized
from August to December 2004 in different districts of Hong Kong,
Kowloon and the New Territories. The exhibition will include display
of information on prevention and screening of cervical cancer, games,
VCD show, distribution of booklet and pamphlet. The public is welcomed
to visit the exhibition. The exhibition dates and venues for August and September are listed
in the following table: The remaining schedule will be announced in due course. Please
look out for it. A publicity video clip titled “Killer cancer of Hong Kong women
– Cervical Cancer” is now on show to the public through the RoadShow
telecast display on 1600 buses over Hong Kong till 30 August. Please
take note when you ride the bus. The video clip can also be viewed
here. The Surveillance & Epidemiology Branch (SEB), established in
June 2004 as a branch under the Centre for Health Protection, is
responsible for formulating strategies and implementing measures
in the surveillance, prevention, and control of communicable diseases
and non-communicable diseases. The SEB assesses the health status
and health needs of the community, plans and implements health intervention
programmes, and conducts research and evaluation. Cervical Screening Programme now becomes a work area of the Non-communicable
Disease Division of the SEB. Since April 2004, the Department of Health has started sending
out invitation letter to women in Hong Kong in phases, inviting
them to join the Cervical Screening Programme. The aim is to arouse
women’s awareness towards cervical cancer and encourage women to
have regular cervical smears. The letter contents can be viewed here. The coming Sunday (9 May 2004) is the Mother's Day. Wish all mothers
good health and a happy Mother's Day. You are welcome to use our
Mother's Day card to send your
warmest regards to your mother. A series of four episodes of 2.5-minutes mini-programme on cervical
cancer have been broadcasted on 13 March, 21 March, 28 March and
4 April 2004. To review these episodes, please browse to the following
link: The Launching Ceremony of the Cervical Screening Programme organized
by the Department of Health is held on Monday, 8 March 2004 at 2:30pm
