Press Release

Roving Exhibition for Cervical Screening Programme

22 August 2004

In Hong Kong, cervical cancer ranks as the fifth commonest cancer and the eighth leading cause of cancer deaths among females.

In 2001, there were 438 new cases and 128 deaths due to cervical cancer.

To increase public awareness and knowledge of cervical screening and women's participation in the Cervical Screening Programme, a roving exhibition will be held from Tuesday (August 24) to December this year in different districts. The public is welcome to attend.

The exhibition, organised by the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health, will include a display of information on the prevention of and screening for cervical cancer, games, a VCD show and the distribution of booklets and pamphlets.

The Cervical Screening Programme was launched by the CHP on March 8, 2004 in collaboration with other service providers in the public and private sectors.

The programme aims to achieve higher screening coverage in the target population, thereby reducing the incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer and improving the quality of life of women in Hong Kong.
